Astronomical winter in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the December solstice, on December 21 or 22. It is the shortest day and longest night of the year. Meteorological winter starts on December 1 and covers December, January and February.

After the solstice, days slowly get longer again, even though the coldest weeks usually come in January and February. In the Southern Hemisphere, the December solstice is the start of summer and the longest day of the year.
